Solar Panels at Self-Storage Facilities
The demand for solar panel installations for both commercial and residential properties has boomed over the past several years. The Solar Energy Industries Association estimates that a new solar project was installed in the United States every 100 seconds in 2018, more than doubling the U.S. solar market in one year alone. There are more than 1.9 million solar installations nationwide today, and the association estimates the number will top 4 million by 2023.
Self-storage properties offer many opportunities for solar projects, and it is critical to provide the appropriate information about your clients' properties to insurance underwriters. Whether your client is adding solar panels or incorporating solar in new construction, MiniCo requires that solar panels be disclosed to your underwriter.
MiniCo needs additional information regarding solar panels at self-storage facilities to include the following:
• Engineering report demonstrating that building(s) can support the weight of the solar installation
• Copy of the lease outlining responsibilities and agreements with local utilities
• Documentation about the installing contractor including experience, licensing, and proof of insurance
• Country where solar panels were manufactured
