5 Tips to Lead New Insurance Agents to Success
The insurance industry is constantly growing with new agents. The learning curve can be steep for young new insurance agents, but there is plenty of opportunity for growth. Here are five tips that will help incoming insurance agents adapt to their new job and succeed.
Almost every job has some aspect of customer service. Insurance is all about the clients. You need to use all your people skills in order to be a successful insurance agent. No one wants to deal with a rude, impatient, or nonresponsive agent. Do your best to reach out to your clients and potential leads, educate them on the policies you offer, and explain why they need the coverage. You are there to inform and help clients identify exposures they may be unaware of and recommend coverages to address those needs.
Dress the Part
You have to dress for the job you want, right? Dressing in formal or business-casual wear actually helps a person feel and perform more professionally, even if you’re working from home. It’s very important for a new agent to dress to impress. You want the other agents around you, as well as your boss, to take you seriously. Sometimes it can be a struggle for younger insurance agents to receive the same level of respect due to a lack of experience. Coworkers and clients are more likely to take you seriously when you look your best.
Develop a Relationship
Developing relationships with your clients is one of the most challenging and important goals of all insurance agents. Make sure clients know that you are available as a resource at all times, not just in times of need. When it’s time for a policy renewal, you want your client to feel confident about your service and excited to do business with you again. Relationship building such as this can also lead to client referrals down the road.
Sell and Market
Your job is to sell. However, selling insurance is different than a commission job at the mall or at a car dealership. You aren’t selling a physical item, and that can be tricky. New insurance agents should dedicate time to get to know the successful agents in the agency and in the local area. Also, it’s a great idea to participate in a few online webinars and professional networking events. There’s always something new to learn, so make it a habit to take notes.
S.M.A.R.T. goals are, Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Result-focused, and Time-bound. As a new insurance agent, you will have a lot of new goals starting out. Make sure that they are S.M.A.R.T. so you know that they are realistic and trackable. There is a lot of multi-tasking involved with insurance; keeping goals will help you stay focused and organized as your insurance career develops and grows.
