How Millennials are Changing the Workplace

Millennials have now surpassed GenX as the largest generation in the workplace, meaning you are going to have to find a way to work with and retain your millennial employees. It’s easy to just believe that once a millennial finds their way to your job they will magically stay as long as your previous employees, but that’s simply not the case. Millennials have been called the job-hopping generation. While the drop in retention rates over the past few years may not be due to them completely, it’s important to look at why your company may not be ideal for these new workers and what you can do to change it.

Physical Workplace

Know that the cubical workplace is not going to work well for all your employees. There may be a few agents that thrive in the seclusion. Others, however, will be faced with a dramatic loss of productivity and reduced morale. And when it comes down to it, 95 percent of employees in a Global Analytics  study reported that the ability to telework affects their decision to stay within a company.

This is even more true with millennials as a flexible work schedule and relaxed workspace is the primary thing they look for when job hunting. If you don’t need to have a meeting with your agents every single day and they have all the tools they need to do their job at their house, consider letting them work remotely. If you honestly don’t trust them enough to work at home, it’s probably worth questioning why you hired them.

Connections

Millennials enjoy having opportunities to connect with others. If you want them to shine, give them opportunities to collaborate and share ideas in a team environment. Have a meeting about ways to improve your agency’s sales then let your agents break into teams and report back to you their different ideas. Give your agents mentor relationships that encourage continuous growth. There’s never really a time where your agents should feel like they’ve completely mastered every aspect of their job; the fun needs to be in a challenge.

These are just two ways in which millennials are changing the workplace. If you are exploring ways of recruiting and retaining your new employees, let us know what strategies you’re using in the comments below or let us know over on Twitter
