A study conducted by the American Society of Interior Design found that almost 70 percent of employees complained about the lighting in their current offices. Good lighting has been found to improve productivity and mood and decrease depression. It’s no wonder that we crave better lighting in our workplace.
Bad lighting, generally artificial lighting, can cause eye strain, and headaches. Your eyes are being forced to work a lot harder in order to see. If the lighting at your workplace is dim, you could be more prone to drowsiness, lack of motivation, and bad focus. Workers are already dealing with staring at computer screens for eight hours a day, sitting and not getting enough blood circulating in their bodies. Poor lighting just adds to the problem
Reduce the Eye Strain: Open the Window
One of the best alternatives to these harsh lights is natural lighting. If you have a workplace that isn’t utilizing available windows, it’s time to start a dialogue. Being able to work in natural lighting has been shown to increase worker happiness and boost productivity.
If natural lighting is not an option for your space look into the cost to bring in a new lighting system. Up front it may seem a little pricey, but you are more than likely going to see some major energy savings, especially if you’re sitting in an office that hasn’t been updated for over 30 years.
