Over the past five years, all 50 states have experienced floods or flash floods, and, on average, more deaths occur due to flooding each year than any other weather-related hazard. Safety precautions during floods should include considerations for electrical safety. Guidance from the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) includes the following.
· Follow directives from utilities or local authorities to turn off utilities including electricity, gas, and water.
· If your self-storage facility experiences flooding, keep the power off and do not use any electrical equipment or outlets until inspected by a licensed and insured electrician.
· Do not touch a circuit breaker or replace a fuse with wet hands or while standing on a wet surface.
· Take appropriate safety precautions in the event of downed power lines (click here for downed power line safety tips).
afe day!
