The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November, and severe storms can strike across the country at any time. The storm preparation checklist for your self-storage facility should include electrical safety considerations. The Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) offers recommendations for before, during, and after a hurricane or severe storm.
Before a Storm: Charge all phones and other equipment, then unplug all electronics and move them as high as possible to avoid damage from rising water. Turn off breakers to avoid power surges if recommended by utilities or local authorities.
During a Storm: Never operate a portable generator indoors, and don’t connect a generator directly to facility wiring unless a transfer switch has been installed. Be sure to use GFCI outlets in areas where water may come in contact with electricity.
After a Storm: Do not use electrical equipment or outlets that have been submerged in water. Schedule an inspection by a licensed and insured electrician before using damaged electronics.
