risk management: tip of the week

Tornado Preparation

There are two areas of the United States that are particularly prone to tornadoes: Florida and "Tornado Alley" in the country's midsection. However, it's critical for self-storage business owners to be aware that tornadoes can happen anywhere at any time. Here are some actions to help businesses be prepared.

Know Your Risk

Be aware of your area's tornado risk.

Know the Signs

Tornadoes often include a rotating funnel cloud, debris clouds, or a loud roar often described as similar to the sound of a train.

Sign Up for Warnings

If your local area has tornado sirens, know how they sound and sign up for Emergency Alert System (EAS) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio emergency alerts.

Pay Attention to Weather Reports

Local meteorologists may predict when conditions indicate that a tornado may form.

Practice Finding Shelter

Identify the nearest safe shelter and practice evacuating employees.

Next week, we will review steps for surviving a tornado.
